Germany Pale Mother - Deutschland Bleiche Mutter DVD $ 79.99    $ 19.99 German Language w. English subtitles. A beautiful, moving account of the filmmaker's own childhood, made for her own daughter, which traces the history of Germany from an extremely personal, intimate point of view. A perfectly normal love story - except that it takes place in Germany at a certain time: during the Nazi era and the Second World War and into the 50s. A man, a woman, a child. He is a soldier in the German army. She has to endure the bombings and the final flight from her home with her child on her shoulders, or hand in hand, making their way through the woods in the snow. Spring comes. The woods are full of dead bodies. The woman endures rape and the privations of the post-war years to build up her marriage again - only to break down in the end, like the whole brittle edifice of familiy bliss for which all three have waited so long - father, mother and child.

Sophie Scholl : The Final Days  VHS $ 19.99 The true story of Germany's most famous anti-Nazi heroine is brought to thrilling life in the multi-award winning drama SOPHIE SCHOLL-THE FINAL DAYS. Germany's official Foreign Language Film selection for the 2005 Academy Awards, SOPHIE SCHOLL stars Julia Jentsch (THE EDUKATORS) in a luminous performance as the young coed-turned-fearless activist. Armed with long-buried historical records of her incarceration, director Marc Rothemund expertly re-creates the last six days of Sophie Scholl's life: a heart-stopping journey from arrest to interrogation, trial and sentence. In 1943, as Hitler continues to wage war across Europe, a group of college students mount an underground resistance movement in Munich. Dedicated expressly to the downfall of the monolithic Third Reich war machine, they call themselves the White Rose. Its sole female member, Sophie Scholl is captured during a dangerous mission to distribute pamphlets on campus with her brother Hans. Unwavering in her convictions and loyalty to the White Rose, her cross-examination by the Gestapo quickly escalates into a searing test of wills as Scholl delivers a passionate call to freedom and personal responsibility that is both haunting and timeless.

Berlin Alexanderplatz  DVD  $ 99.99 Total Running Time 15 hours and 30 min. German Language with English subtitle. Rainer Werner Fassbinder tells the story in Alfred Döblin's novel "Berlin Alexanderplatz" as follows: "... The former transport worker Franz Biberkopf is released from prison where he served a four-year sentence for killing his former girl-friend Ida with an egg-beater. Ida had turned to prostitution to support him in Berlin in the economically troubled 20s. At first, the former jailbird has considerable problems with his virility, but overcomes these by almost raping his victim's sister, so that he is subsequently able to start a relationship with a Polish girl, Lina. Their relationship is such that they consider it to be love and Franz is persuaded to swear that he will lead an honest life from now on, so help ... or something like that. The financial conditions are catastrophic and all attempts to establish a sound foundation prove futile, be it tie clasps, erotic literature, the Völkischer Beobachter - but that creates trouble with former friends, communists, with whom he had once sympathized because he liked them. And so he sells shoelaces, they are always needed, together with Lina's uncle, but he eventually takes advantage of Franz's trust in him and starts blackmailing and threatening a widow whom Franz had once helped out in return for money. With his inshatterable faith in the goodness in people, Franz is so hurt that he withdraws from the world and other people and spends several weeks just drinking, eventually returning to life and the rest of mankind.

Escape from Berlin ( Flucht aus Berlin ) Language German and or English. DVD $ 14.99  In 1946, one year after the end of the World War II the Soviet Military administration begun to safeguard the demarcation lines of the Soviet sectors to the West.

Traveling between all sectors of Germany was restricted and an "Interzonenpass" (Inter-zone passport) was required to travel from one sector to another. The Interzonenpass was 30 days valid and travellers had to apply for that pass at the authorities which could refuse the application. Crossing the border between East and West Germany without permission was possible but became more and more dangerous.
Thousands of East German citizen had escaped to the West over the borders between East and West Germany, East Germany and Berlin and within Berlin.

On May 26, 1952 the East German government decided to close the border and to build up a frontier area between East and West Germany and between West Berlin and East Germany.
After May 26, 1952 there was only one quite safe way to escape to the West: Berlin.
Although many border crossing points were closed in Berlin and controls at the border happened, it was quite easy to leave the Eastern sector of Berlin to the Western sector. Many East German citizen went to Berlin, bought a S-Bahn (suburban train) or U-Bahn (subway) ticket  and left East Berlin.

On August 13, 1961 the East German government decided to close the 'last gap' in the border to West Berlin and the Berlin Wall was build up.
East German citizen were not allowed to leave the country without permission.
However, during the first days many people could escape through the border but day by day it became more dangerous.
At the beginning people tried to climb over the Wall or the fences, they jumped out of the houses which were in the border area or tunnels were build to escape. During the first days several people lost their live or were killed by the Eastern border guard .
Günter Litwin was the first victim who was shot down by East German border guard in Berlin on August 24, 1961.

171 people were killed or died attempting to escape at the Berlin Wall between August 13, 1961 and November 9, 1989.

The Lives of Others VHS $ 19.99  German Language with English subtitles. Critics could not come up with enough superlatives to celebrate this film which succeeds on every level, from acting to film scoring and, most importantly, as both a human drama and taut political thriller. Set in 1984, five years before Glasnost and the downfall of the Berlin Wall, the movie focuses on Captain Gerd Wiesler (Ulrich Muhe), a highly skilled officer, employed by the Stasi, who is steadily growing disillusioned with the government he supports. His latest mission involves the surveillance of a couple, a celebrated writer and his actress girlfriend. It is while spying on the pair that Wiesler’s attentions turn from professional to personal, especially when he learns of a shocking secret involving the attractive actress he is peeping on, a secret that could cost him his own career if he does not extract needed information from her directly. The film ultimately ends in 1991 in what is now the reunited Germany. The country is changed and so is Wiesler. This is a fast-paced thriller that will pull you in and not let go. A film that asks questions that everyday people might ask. A film to remember. Don’t miss it.

Baader German Terrorism $ 19.99 VHS !!  German Language with English subtitles.
The crisis years between 1968 and 1977 represented the most tumultuous era in West Germany's entire internal social-political history. The student protests of 1968 that promised so much hope, quickly fizzled into riots. Many of the leftist students would follow Rudi Dutschke's clarion call and begin their "long march through the institutions" (a decade later many of these former radical students were the main force behind the Greens party). But a select few of the radicals had no time for any nebulous march -- they wanted Revolution now, and sought to kickstart the cause through terrorism.

For a time, it seemed as if the West German flavor of leftist urban guerrilla warfare might have a measure of success. German polls showed an extraordinary number of Germans supported their cause in one way or another (only 10 to 20%, but a remarkable number nonetheless).

But the support fizzled to almost nothing when the West German terrorists stopped merely robbing banks and began killing people. Most of the leaders of the most famous West German terrorist group, the Baader-Meinhof Gang, were captured in mid-1972. Their followers would kidnap and kill close to a dozen people over the next five years in an effort to secure their leaders' release from prison, but it was all in vain. The German government had no intention of releasing them.

Ein Tag im September DVD $ 19.99 (- One day in September. German Language or English. The documentary begins with an advertisement by the Munich Tourism Bureauinvited with a young girl to visit the city for the Olympics, then shows interviews with the wives of some of the murdered athletes, including Ankie Spitzer, wife of Andre Spitzer. The film also features the first interview with Jamal Al-Gashey, allegedly the only surviving terrorist. Al-Gashey, who is in hiding in Africa, wears a cap and sunglasses and his face is slightly blurred.
There are various shots of the games getting underway, and attention is given to the lax security the Germans had at the games. The terrorists are seen preparing for the assault; Al-Gashey claims that he and the other members were trained in Libya before going to West Germany to begin the assault.
The assault is described by Al-Gashey as well as by some of the German security staff present. Footage of ABC anchor Jim McKay is interspersed, along with sound clips of Peter Jennings, to give an impression of events unfolding as they happened.
The film alleges that the rescue operation was poorly planned and executed: the snipers were not prepared and were poorly positioned. The film implies that had the German government prepared better, the athletes might have been saved. Former Mossad Director Zvi Zamir, who was present at the airport during the final gunfight, is interviewed about his views on the failed rescue (he had previously been interviewed on this subject in an NBC profile of the Munich massacre broadcast during the Barcelona Olympics). Potential viewers should note that graphic photographs of the dead Israelis and Palestinians are shown at the end of this section.
The film also alleges that the October 29 hijacking of a German Lufthansa jet and its subsequent release in exchange for the three Black September members being held for trial was a set-up by the German government, who did not want their failings to be made obvious in the trial.A skillful, unnerving documentary that re-creates the massacre of eleven Israeli athletes by Palestinian terrorists at the 1972 Munich Olympics. The Germans, eager to dispel remaining doubts about the peaceable character of the "New Germany," kept security guards away from the Olympic Village and tried to persuade the Palestinians that the killing of Jews on German soil should not happen again. Later, at an airport near Munich, the local police performed with an ineptitude almost hard to believe. The movie, which is narrated by Michael Douglas, consists of period television footage, a few staged episodes, and interviews with participants, including the sole surviving terrorist and some very sheepish German officials.

"Starbuck" Holger Meins RAF Terrosist DVD $ 24.99 1970 Terrorism in Germany. German Language with English subtitles. with Michael Ballhaus, Suzanne Beyeler, Manfred Blessmann, George Clooney, Gretchen Dutschke and many more...In the 1970s a strange phenomenon dominated the headlines in Europe.  A section of revolutionary youth embraced Maoism and in Germany the Red Army Faction (in Italy the Red Brigades) launched guerrilla war in their respective countries.
The movements reflected a deep alienation amongst a number of left intellectuals.  Their parents generation had been dominated by Fascism and the post-war societies had seen many middle-ranking Fascists re-installed in power as the US set up its Iron curtain against the USSR.
The RAF (also known as the Baader-Meinhoff group) was always tiny.  In actually had, for a considerable period, some sympathy among young workers, but this never translated into support. The movement was savagely suppressed and has been almost forgotten, but there has been a recent revival of interest in Germany.  Below Andrew Johnson revisits the movement in a review of a film tribute to one of its leading figures.Holger Meins (1941-74) became an iconic figure for sections of the German far left. A gifted artist who became involved in that section of late 1960s Berlin society where artistic and political commitment overlapped, Meins later became a founding member of the Red Army Faction, went underground, had his capture broadcast on TV and later died on hunger strike. Yet Meins was known mainly through pictures – on wanted posters, the footage of his arrest, his mug shots, the famous photo of the skeletal Meins in his coffin. In this film the last picture is compared to that of the dead Che Guevara, and there is an obvious parallel in that the icon obscures the person underneath.in 28 years of existence the group was responsible for 23 deaths (set alongside the 26 RAF members and sympathisers who died in the same period), it is hard to comprehend the hysteria that seized German society in the mid-1970s, with the Schmidt government apparently sharing the RAF’s delusion that this little group threatened the very existence of the state. Yet the RAF is not without interest, as an example of how some false premises and bad decisions virtually destroyed what was a very promising revolutionary movement. If new movements are to be built to fight the injustice that inspired those fighters, it does not reflect on their personal courage to say that they have provided us with examples of what not to do.The Red Army Faction formally dissolved in 1998, after several years of inactivity. The failure to achieve anything it had set out to do simply led to an impasse in the group’s thinking, a profound demoralisation and the recognition that the RAF tradition was now obsolete. Organisationally, this movement left nothing behind, but we are beginning to see a critical engagement with its history, which might inform a new generation of radicals. Certainly there has been substantial work published in German in recent years (there is little English-language material on the RAF, most of it very old and very bad).

What to Do in Case of Fire -  Was tun, wenn's brennt? VHS  $ 19.99 German Language with English subtitles. A heavy-handed but engrossing German drama about a group of ex-radicals who try to escape the ever-closer clutches of the police after a 15-year-old bomb they planted accidentally goes off, What to Do in Case of Fire paints a questionably sympathetic portrait of people trying to erase their pasts. Occasionally the humor found in the group's difficulty grasping the changes the years have wrought erases the distasteful attempt to whitewash these anarchists' violent past. Still, it's a copout to pretend that these particular radicals never seemed to have hurt anyone seriously, and indeed, even the exploded bomb only slightly injures two innocent bystanders. It's up to the considerable efforts of a most capable cast--including Til Schweiger (Tim) and Nadja Uhl (Nele)--to draw us into their morally skewered story. When a twenty-year-old bomb explodes in an abandoned mansion in modern-day Berlin, the evidence points to a notorious late-1980s anarchist group. As the police start looking for them, the six former rebels reunite for the first time in 12 years to come up with a plan to protect themselves. But sparks fly when the group must reconcile their youthful ideals with their new lives and pick up the pieces of the relationships they left behind. WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF FIRE is a thrilling dramatic caper featuring Til Schweiger (DRIVEN), legendary character actor Klaus Lowitsch (THE ODESSA FILE), and an amazing ensemble of Germany's hottest young actors.

DAS WUNDER VON BERN - THE MIRACLE OF BERN $ 15.99  Language : Deutsch oder Englisch. Subtitles : English, France und Spanisch Language : English or German with optional German, French and Spain subtitles.  Summer, 1954. The Soviet Union is sending its prisoners of war home. Among them is the father of a quiet, football-loving 11-year-old, Matthias, who lives with his mother, sister and brother in a West-German mining town. The boy has long found a surrogate father in the local football player Helmut Rahn, who has "adopted" Matthias as his mascot. The return of the boy's father Richard casts a shadow over the once-happy family: broken by his years in captivity, Richard has trouble adapting to life in post-war Germany and alienates his family through his severity. For Richard, football is pointless, and so is the World Cup that's about to be held in Bern, Switzerland. Matthias, however, longs to be there with his idol, who's been chosen to play on the German team. Through his passion for the game and his fighting spirit, Matthias rekindles a love of life in his dad's heart. And so, as the final match of the World Cup begins, a little miracle of love and generosity leaps across borders to help another miracle occur - the victory of Helmut Rahn and the German team, the miracle of Bern.

The main character is a butcher who serves as an executioner for the Nazis and also turns in four antifascists. After these atrocities become know, customers start to boycott his store, his wife takes her life, and he shoots himself. IN 1943 he deserted the German Army and joined Greek partisans. After the war he worked in theaters in Munich and Berlin and from 1949 to 1951 as Art Director for DEFA. The Axe of Wandsbek was Harnack's debut as a film director. Yet some six weeks after its premiere, the film was banned to generating compassion for the hangman. Harnack left the East German studio to direct only in the West. IN 1962 he was refused permission to bring an edited version of The Axe of Wandsbek to GDR cinemas. Only in 1981 did the restoration of the original version become possible. This was how the East German Ministry of Culture fulfilled the leading actor Erwin Geschonneck's 75th birthday wish.
